The Great American Songbook

Ragazzi Continuo presents The Great American Songbook, a collection of pieces that have defined and shaped the musical landscape of the United States over the course of its history. While the title traditionally has referred to a selection of popular songs and jazz standards from the early 20th Century–songs like Irving Berlin's "Blue Skies," represented here in a barbershop arrangement by Clay Hine–this neglects many hundreds of years of great American music. Continuo invites you to take a journey with us exploring this rich musical history, from colonial times to the present day.

Weep with revolutionaries in William Billings' "Lamentation Over Boston" and carouse with soldiers in a new arrangement of a Civil War standard from Continuo's own Daniel Crowley. Experience the powerful shape note singing tradition in Reginald Untersher's exciting arrangement of B.F. White's "When I Hear The Trumpet Sound" and the beautiful simplicity of Appalachian chant in "Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah." You'll hear songs from great singer-songwriters like James Taylor and David Crosby, as well as contemporary classical works from Richard Burchard and Dale Trumbore. From sea to shining sea, The Great American Songbook has something for everyone.

Ragazzi Continuo presents "Christmastime Is Here"

Ragazzi Continuo presents its 2016 holiday concert, Christmastime Is Here, a celebration of all that the season brings and means to each of us. Familiar Christmas carols are joined by popular favorites such as the Perry Como classic "Home For The Holidays," Hebrew psalms set by Italian Renaissance composer Salamone Rossi, and winter-inspired songs from around the globe. You'll hear Vince Guaraldi's jazzy harmonies in his beloved Peanuts tune, full-throated Russian singing on Rachmaninoff's "Bogoroditse Devo," and jaunty French exuberance in "Il est ne, le Divin Enfant." We are especially proud to be premiering a newly commissioned work by local composer Derek Sup, an arrangement of the English folk tune "Oh, The Snow It Melts The Soonest." Join us this December for a concert of memories, meanings, good cheer and irrepressible spirit. Put some holly in your holidays!

Ragazzi Continuo presents "In Paradisum"

Ragazzi Continuo invites you to join us for our spring concert series, "In paradisum." Our set this season focuses on examining the concept of paradise, blending texts drawn from nature settings of great beauty with those exploring man's relationship with the supernatural. We hope this concert transports you safely between the two, leaving feelings of wonder, joy and contentment.

Among our selections you will find familiar texts, such as a vibrant setting of the traditional Scottish folksong "Loch Lomond," and be swept away by the beauty and depth of American composer Randall Thompson's "Alleluia." Classic German lied exalting the hills and valleys of Germany will contrast with the supernatural wonder of Sarah Hopkins' "Past Life Melodies." This is a concert not to be missed!

Fauré Requiem and Songs of Nature

Ragazzi's boys and young men, along with alumni chorus Ragazzi Continuo, present Gabriel Fauré's masterpiece Requiem in D minor. One of the romantic-era composer's most beloved pieces, Fauré wrote that the work is "dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest." The Requiem's achingly beautiful Pie Jesu for solo soprano voice will be sung as the composer intended: by a boy treble. Ragazzi is thrilled to present this magnificent music in its entirety, using the original orchestration.

In the concert's second half, Ragazzi Continuo will present music that examines our relationship with the natural world. Songs will explore the peace, joy and awe inspired by flowing water, forests, and gardens.

Carols Ancient and New

Ragazzi Continuo, the men's a cappella choir composed of alumni of the acclaimed Ragazzi Boys Chorus, invites you to join it at its holiday concert, Carols Ancient and New. This remarkable vocal ensemble will present a thrilling and festive program which blends classic Christmas favorites from around the world and throughout time. Audiences will delight in the vibrancy of the American Spiritual in Don Besig's "Glory Hallelu!" and be transfixed by the beauty of Robert Kyr's setting of "Balulalow". Familiar Western carols like David Conte's sprightly arrangement "Pat-a-pan" and Phillip Lawson's haunting setting of "Veni, Veni Emmanuel" contrast with more global works, including the traditional Nigerian Christmas song, "Betelehemu". Covering music spanning over six centuries, this concert is not one to be missed!

Tidings of Comfort

Ragazzi Continuo is proud to present Tidings of Comfort. The holiday season is a time to gather with friends and family and spread warmth and cheer. Since our days as youngsters in Ragazzi Boys Chorus, we have spent our holidays in the shared joy of song. This year, we have chosen songs that best embody the power of music to console in even the most difficult times. We have also included some of our favorite carols that will be sure to rouse your holiday spirit. Highlights include the deeply moving "Prayer of the Children" by Kurt Bestor; "Super Flumina Babylonis," a Ragazzi Boys Chorus favorite by Italian Renaissance master Giovanni Palestrina; "Homeless," the classic collaboration between Paul Simon and Ladysmith Black Mambazo; a new arrangement of "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" by a member of the group, and Tarik O'Regan's abstract but beautiful interpretation of "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot."

Ex Corde: The Rhythm of the Land

Breaking away from their traditional classical roots, join the young men of Ragazzi Continuo as they present a concert of traditional and folk music from around the world. Ex Corde (meaning "From the Heart") brings you an eclectic, inspiring and, at times, heart-wrenching musical selection spanning the globe. You will delight in the raw hymns of Appalachia and charming ballads of the English Isles, including the classic Welsh lullaby "Suo Gan" and the ever-moving "Loch Lomond". As each piece takes you on a journey, you'll learn that, despite dialect or religion or geography, the language of music is universal. And it all comes from the same place ex corde. So bring yourself, bring a friend, bring the whole family this is a program you won't want to miss!

An English Renaissance

All-too-often overlooked by singers in favor of the Italian Renaissance, the English Renaissance played setting to the reign of Elizabeth I, the wit of William Shakespeare, and many, many a renaissance faire...but we won't hold that against it. More important, it was the era of Byrd, Dowland, Morley, Tallis, and others. Though these English masters inherited the history of their craft from the Italians, they brought both sensation and sensibility to the art of choral music. Join the voices of Continuo in a rare "classical" treat - fine vocal music in a language everyone will understand.

Songs of Wintertide

Is it possible to present a collection of carols that are wonderfully familiar, yet not overdone, and fresh to the ear? YES! "Songs of Wintertide" is Continuo's collection of carols we wish we heard more often. In selecting each carol, we took care to find captivating and beautiful arrangements of each tune - and where we couldn't find one, we created our own! Guaranteed to be a one-of-a-kind experience, the concert is also a merry reunion with tunes we'd forgotten that we loved as the years have passed. Renaissance fans (and all you soon-to-be fans) will enjoy our complete setting of Josquin's beautiful Missa Ave Maris Stella -- a mass setting traditionally sung during the holiday season.
